Monday musings...

We MUST value each possession more greatly if we're to have a chance next weekend. If that means that we need to slow down, then slow the heck down.

Chris must HUNT his shot, and he can't wait until we're down 15 before he decides to start doing so.

Get the ball in Tyler's hands early and often. If UL runs a 2-3, the offense needs to run through Tyler on every offensive possession.

Wayne! Left-hand hook shots. Are you serious? Fantastic.

Williams was SOLID off the bench. Snags them boards.

When this team plays to win (see overtime), they're great. When this team plays not to lose (see everytime they get a double-digit lead), they're average.

Does it seem like Chris is a turnover machine compared to last year? Something's not right with his handle.

Ramar was brilliant in OT. Simply brilliant.

Not a bad move by Butler not to foul with 36 sec. left in OT, hoping we'd screw up again and turn it over, but Chris and Ramar made them pay for that gamble.

Tyler can hit the shot, but I think he settles for the fadeaway TOO much. Time to shot fake on the fadeaway and stick it up their nose.

One win from even more Tennessee basketball history. Because this team is the best team in the program's history, we want so badly for them to attain the best finish in Tennessee basketball history. That's why falling in the SEC tournament hurt so much and why this team needs to kick down the Sweet Sixteen door and march right into the Elite Eight. If we can do that, I honestly like our chances against Carolina. We will be up for that one. We will be ready.

Memphis musings...

Even with the chance to become the unanimous #1 team in the land, losing to Memphis would still hurt worse than winning would feel good.

What are the odds that Bruce wears the Florida 2006 suit again?

I will never be convinced that he didn't know what was going to happen when he donned those threads down in Gainesville.

If Chris & Juannie can combine for 35 points, we win. Tyler will get his 10-15 as is his custom.

If we can get 3 fouls on Dorsey in the 1st half, we win. Time to learn the pump fake.

If we shoot 66% on free throws with at least 15 attempts, we probably win.

Monday musings...

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Yes, USC turned over the ball, but each of those turnovers was forced. Pressure caused the picks, and excellent ball-work caused the fumbles.

We also should've had a pick in the end zone on USC's first TD drive. If we had done that, SC may have well folded the tent.

On 3rd and 4 in the 4th quarter, I said to myself, "We should just line up and pound it twice here, if necessary. If we don't get it, we don't get it." What did we do? Throw two incomplete passes. It's easy to be a coach in the stands.

I can't stand people who are silent when things are going well and screaming at the coaches when things are falling apart. I had one of those right behind me, and I went ahead and told him just as much. He wasn't getting on the coaches much after that. I must be very intimidating.

The ghost of Collins Cooper came back and occupied the body of Ryan Succop.

I honestly think that we will win the East with a 5-3 record. Everyone will lose at least one more game except South Carolina, and we'll have the tiebreaker over the Cocks and the Dawgs.

A 5-3 team vs. a 7-1 national championship contender in the SEC title game. Sounds familiar. Maybe Ainge will get hurt and Crompton will run us to a victory while LSU fumbles away the game in the second half.

Aren't I getting a little bit ahead of myself? No, of course not.
I'm getting WAY ahead of myself.

The name "Arian" almost became a curse word in the state of Tennessee. Does he only fumble in the most critical situations?

It blows my mind at how much more valuable basketball tickets are than football tickets. I've been checking out the prices on eBay - you can expect to pay two grand for a pair in the lower level at the new Tommy Bowl. That's anywhere in the lower level - I'm not talking center court here.

It was pretty chilly in the stadium on Saturday night. Finally. One more layer would've helped the situation.

Should I go to the game next week? Would it be a more valuable use of my time to do yardwork and listen on the radio?

Spurrier's genius is shown in the fact that he is able to recognize when his quarterback is going to lose him a game. He will immediately pull that QB out and insert another. Most of the time, this will improve his team's play, as it did on Saturday. He's not afraid. He doesn't coach not to lose. He tries to win, and doesn't hesitate to act.

I really would've liked to see USC's practices this past week so that I could compare the practice play of Smelley and Mitchell. There was no comparison out on the field during the game. You know, though, that Mitchell has won a game at Neyland. There's a lot to be said for that, and it probably should've been taken into account when picking a starter. The choice may have cost the Cocks the ball game.

Monday musings...

Bama pounded us on Saturday afternoon because they had an identity, and we didn’t. I know it’s much more complicated than that, but Bama knew what they wanted to do and who they wanted to be, and they went out there and imposed their will upon us. That is how you dominate in any sport. That is how we dominated UGA, and how we were dominated Saturday.

The Tide said, “We’re going to throw, and we don’t think that you can stop us.” Well, they threw, and we didn’t stop them.

Letting D.J. Hall score on 3rd and goal from the 18 was Jonathan Hefney’s fault. Completely. I couldn’t believe that I actually saw him let Alabama’s all-time leading receiver run directly by him and allow the ball to sail directly over his head and into said receiver’s arms for a TD. Inexcusable.

Speaking of Hefney, dude talks WAY too much for the performance he’s throwing out there.

Creer on 3rd and 1? Seriously?

And then compound that mistake by punting? We didn’t stop them when they started at the 20, why not take the risk of giving it to them at the 50? What’s the difference? Coaching not to lose…

Speaking of which…when one staff is coaching to win and the other is coaching not to lose, the game will not be close. Guaranteed.

I want to see this coaching staff succeed. My faith in their ability is barely hanging on at this point.

Spurrier will have plenty of tricks for our defense on Saturday. You can take that one to the bank.

Will a supportive crowd show up like they did for the Georgia game? I’m not so sure anymore. This really is starting to feel like 2005, right around the Carolina game. I can really see a similar game unfolding on Saturday night as the 2005 game.

However, if we come out there with an identity (either running or throwing, but I prefer running), then we can take over the game and impose our will and win. Spurrier will be playing to win. Let’s hope that we are too.

Monday musings...

I didn't watch one second of the Vols' game with Mississippi St. live. I was hoping to catch the second half, but the establishment where I was located at the time was sans GamePlan. The house where I was staying could not get ESPN360. I was out of luck. I breezed through the Vol Network replay last night on my TiVo.

There's not too much to say about this game. On the surface, it seemed like a fairly lackluster win over a pesky Bulldog squad. The Vols weren't at their best, but they weren't at their worst either. They made the plays to win, which is what matters in the end.

However, without looking at the stats, I know that the Vols must have piled up a bunch of yardage, because they hit two short field goals, one medium one, and one long one, while missing a short one. Those kicks, combined with the three touchdowns and no turnovers received from State, tells me that we moved the ball. This is a good thing, but we've gotta finish the drives better. I know we didn't punt much either, which means that our offense was getting it done. Austin's drop in the end zone kept this game from seeming more like the blowout that it could have been.

I was actually in Iowa attending the Hawkeyes' game with a hot Illinois team, who was coming off consecutive victories over ranked conference foes. The Zooker reverted to his formerly incompetent self, twice accepting penalties after his defense had stopped a 3rd down play. On both occasions, Iowa converted on the longer 3rd down plays, once for the only touchdown in the game. If Iowa was forced to kick what would have been a tying FG in the 3rd quarter, Illinois likely escapes with a victory.

It was not really an exciting defensive struggle, as one might expect. Both fanbases didn't really seem too much into the game until the 4th quarter, and the noise was marginal at best, which is the opposite of my previous Iowa experiences.

A good time was had, though. I'm glad the good guys won.

Could Chris Brown have been any more wide open on his TD?

I'm not really happy about Kentucky winning over LSU. A confident Kentucky is not good for the Vols, no matter what the game might mean on November 24th. What it will definitely mean, no matter what, is Kentucky's best chance to beat the Big Orange in my entire consciousness of Tennessee football.

I've got this theory that the Vols' offense is better in the daylight than at nighttime. I'm glad the Bama game is at 12:30. I'm not looking forward to the inevitable night game against Carolina. (UGA-UF will be the CBS game.) I like the sunshine. Call me crazy, but I think the later game time gives our guys more hours in the day in which to become nervous and tight. Same goes for the fanbase. Sounds stupid, and there's no way to prove it. Just a hunch.

I just can't get off this. When was the last time we played really well (or scored a big victory over a quality opponent) in a night game at home? I'm scanning my brain, and the last one I can come up with is Florida 2004. Before that, probably South Carolina in 2001. My point is, we will need to play really well in order to handle the Cocks and Spurrier in a couple of weeks.

For illustrative purposes, when exactly have we laid eggs at home at night? And I'm not even going to mention extremely lackluster victories here, but in the same timeframe: Bama 2002, UGA 2003, Auburn 2004, Carolina 2005. Florida 2006 is arguable.

Here's hoping we can break through on October 27th.

That's all for now.
