Tennessee football fans seem so dang obsessed with the spread offense, and especially Florida's spread offense. It's easy to see why...59-20. However, the 59 finished 9-4.
The two teams in the BCS Championship game...spread offense? No, sir. Offensive creativity? We certainly saw some of that from LSU.
The other teams that were considered among the best at the end of the season...Georgia & USC...spread? Nope.
Clearly, a team doesn't need the spread option offense in order to be successful. Tennessee doesn't need it either. Furthermore, we don't have the personnel to run it successfully. First, we don't have Tim Tebow. Second, we don't have Pat White. Yes, the spread is exciting. It can score a lot of points. Fans usually like a lot of points. It makes going to and watching the games a lot of fun. The goal is to win, though, and I saw most of the winning done this year by teams that were running solid, traditional offenses with some creativity thrown in.
I'm liking the hiring of Clawson. He looks like a run-first guy, which meshes well with Tennessee's run-first tradition and their head coach's focus. He didn't run the spread option at Richmond, and I'm glad that we aren't going to see it at UT. I want us to win, not just look pretty.
